Create a blog and include the following materials. Email it to me

1.  Central park assignment:/20
a.  Make some observations based on the Forest Pep package:
10 marks:  you used all your senses and described how this place engaged your senses in a page.  You also made additional observations about this place in a paragraph. Your writing is outstanding and show insight. You communicate new ideas about the site.     8-9 marks: you answered the questions in Forest Pep and included some observations and offered a few insights

5-7 you minimally answered questions and offered no insight

0-4 your work is incomplete

10 marks:  you included drawings and photos of your site .  Your drawings show careful observation.  Your photos are very well done and nicely composed. Your photos correctly identify species

8-9  you include photos of your site and correctly identify species.  Your photos are very well done

6-7 you include only 3-4 photos

0-5  your work is not quite complete

2.  Dichotomous key of the species of central park /10
10 marks - your key is comprehensive and makes sense. good presentation
8-9 marks - your key is compresensive and makes sense
6-7 marks  - your key includes most, not all species.  Something about it doesn't quite make sense but it works

Test on Plantae Wed Nov 15

The test will be based on this practice test  which you already did based on some reading
 a few more questions

Evolution Notes and a Webquest connecting Plants to evolution

Here is the Webquest.  Do this web quest and answer the following questions on the Evolution notes
1.  What is evolution?  2 definitions
2.   Compare macroevolution with microevolution
3.   Divergent evolution leads to adaptive radiation.  Explain these terms
4.   What are Homologous traits? Give examples
5.   Convergent evolution leads to analogous traits.  Give examples
6.   What is an adaptation?  Give examples of bird adaptations

And here are the Evolution notes

evolution, natural selection (see all previous notes in previous posts below)

including this one:
How evolutionary change occurs

also powerpoints on

Compare and Contrast field study

Make a list of the plants you saw at Lighthouse Park and Quarry Rock, Deep Cove.  These are both West Coast Rainforests but they had different conditions.

Make a table with the following headings and two columns, one column for Lighthouse and one for Quarry.

A Headings
1. Trees list, any difference in species inventory?
2. Bushes list
3. understory such as ferns and mosses
4. Signs of animals

5. Age of the forest comparison.

B  Which of the plants were
a.  seedless nonvascular
b. seedless vascular
c.  gymnosperm
d.  angiosperm

Write a paragraph describing your experience at Quarry Rock hike including the Personal Perception values

1.  LIGHT levels, colour, scenes
2.  SOUND
3.  AIR quality, scents
4.  movement  of feet over the terrain
5.  mood

Quarry Rock hike at Deep Cove

Great job for all our biology 11 hikers today.  We looked at second growth rainforest and saw many of the same species as our trip to Lighthouse park. This time, the vine leaf maple, big leaf maple and salmonberry were turning beautiful fall colours.  The conifers we saw were the same, but younger. Those who were on the hike can write a reflection on their experience

Sk'i-wit-sut Lighthouse Park Reflection and a video on Mother Trees

Think back to your trip to Lighthouse Park and analyze it with your senses.  Compare and contrast your sensory experiences in
1.  Downtown Vancouver, as we waited for the bus
2.  Lighthouse Park forest or foreshore (the rocky beach)

Questions.  What did you

see - light levels
hear sounds
smell
touch - what textures did you sense

What was the ground beneath you like...
What was the mood of the place?
What interactions did you observe (think of forest interactions)

How did you experience the living things around you?
